There are no access roads to Tustumena Lake. Boaters can travel into the lake through water access points or carry their boat in on foot. Located nearby on the upper and lower parts of Skilak lake are two boat launches open to the public.

While boating is a popular past time, the lake has a history of being dangerous for small boats. This is due to the high winds that blow off of the Tustumena Glacier.
